Welsh Government considers December tier system to keep Covid infections down in run up to Christmas

Welsh Government could introduce a tier system in Wales in the run up to Christmas.

Health Minister Vaughan Gething today said they working on how they could loosen measures around the festive period - working with other UK nations on a common approach.

But he told the Welsh Government briefing that this could mean in the weeks before Christmas, Wales could bring in a tiered system - similar to that seen in England and Scotland.

England will enter a strengthened three-tiered system of local restrictions when the national lockdown ends on December 2, Downing Street has said.

Wales has moved to national rather than local restrictions since its firebreak ended this month and Mr Gething said he wanted to keep any new measures as simple as possible for people to understand.

It is understand any tier could cover the whole of Wales but include similar measures to those seen in tiers in England.

Talking about the Christmas period, the Health Minister said: "We are considering here in Wales whether we can have a more common approach to measures in advance of Christmas.

"We are starting to see in some part of Wales a rise in coronavirus cases again and an increase in under 25s.

"We need to get to the festive season. That may mean that we look to potentially think about the measures Scotland have introduced as well as England where they have a tiered system which largely complement each other.

"We will be thinking over the next week about whether we do need to have common approaches as far as possible in terms of how we ask people to live their lives."

He said discussions would take place this week with the cabinet and health chiefs about the potential way forward.

He said these measures would give more "headroom" around Christmas.
