Welsh Government confirms 'fire break' lockdown being considered to control spread of coronavirus

Welsh Government has confirmed it is seriously considering a "fire break" set of lockdown restrictions to control the spread of Covid.

The Government said new measures are needed as virus cases continue to rise.

No decision has been made but sources have indicated to Business Live that measures could be introduced as soon as Monday.

A Welsh Government spokesman said: “The measures we have put in place at both a local and a national level, with help from the public, have kept the spread of the virus under check.

"However, there is a growing consensus that we now need to introduce a different set of measures and actions to respond to the virus as it is spreading across Wales more quickly through the autumn and winter.

“We are actively considering advice from SAGE and our TAC Group.

"A ‘fire break’ set of measures to control Covid-19, similar to that described in the SAGE papers, is under consideration in Wales.

"But no decisions have been made.”

Minutes from a 21 September meeting of the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE), published on the government website on Monday night, showed that a short period of lockdown was at the top of a list of measures to be considered for "immediate introduction".

Northern Ireland is the first Government in the UK to agree to a new national lockdown, with most measures coming into force on Friday.

Pubs and restaurants will close for four weeks, with the exception of takeaways and deliveries, while schools will close on Monday for two weeks – one of which will cover the half-term Halloween break.

It stops short of the full lockdown imposed in March, but they are the toughest measures to be introduced in any of the UK’s four countries so far.
