Welsh football season ends early with Connah's Quay named as champions

Connah's Quay Nomads have been crowned Welsh champions for the first time after the Football Association of Wales decided to end the season early because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The FAW announced on Tuesday they had curtailed the season and awarded the Cymru Premier League title to Connah's Quay on a points-per-game method.

As such, the North Wales side go into UEFA Champions League qualifying next season, with runners-up TNS and third-placed Bala entering the Europa League.

Connah's Quay were four points clear of TNS when football was stopped in March.

Fourth-placed Barry Town also go into the Europa League, taking the planned spot for the Welsh Cup which has been abandoned by the FAW.

The FAW say promotion and relegation issues involving feeder leagues will be sorted out in due course, but they wanted to conclude the European positions.

Swansea City Ladies are the women's Welsh Premier League champions and will go into the Champions League.

The FAW's decision to end the season follows discussions with clubs over the weekend.

Other leagues have chosen to carry on, with the Premier League due to restart next month and Cardiff City and Swansea City following suit in the Championship.
