Welsh dad on life support after horrific holiday accident in Spain

A dad is on life support after being hit by a car while on a family holiday in Spain.

Haydn Atwood was on the first day of a trip to Malaga with his girlfriend and son when the horrific accident happened.

The carer, from Trethomas in Caerphilly , was jogging down the side of a hill with 17-year-old Ashley when he tripped and fell.

He then fell into the path of an oncoming car - before his teenage son witnessed the sight of his dad being thrown into the air.

His sister Hailey said: "He had to be resuscitated on the side of the road. He had internal bleeding but he's had surgery and they managed to stop the bleeding inside.

"But he also had a bleed on the brain and his skull is fractured on one side. He's on life support and he's got a tube down his throat.  His organs are damaged from the impact.

"He's in a bad way."

The horrific accident happened at around 10pm on Tuesday.

Following a frantic call to the emergency services, 39-year-old Haydn was rushed from the scene of the crash and taken to Hospital Clinico Universitario, where he remains on a ventilator.

Hailey said her brother - who is a carer for their mother - needed surgery on his heart, but was too weak.

She added: "He's highly sedated at the moment but they're going to try and reduce the sedation on Friday.

Hailey has since flown out to Spain to be at her brother's bedside - as they struggle to come to terms with what has happened.

She added: "It was their first day out there and they had gone for a walk with Ashley. They were jogging down the side of a mountain and his momentum picked up and they didn't stop.

"He went straight onto the motorway and got hit by a car. His son saw his father fly up in the air."

Haydn's family were also shocked to discover he had not taken out holiday insurance.

"I couldn't believe it when I was told," Hailey said. "He hasn't got travel insurance, so getting him home could prove be costly."
