Welsh councils begin closing children's playgrounds and parks

Children's council-run playgrounds across Wales as well as some parks are closing from Sunday night in a bid to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

Neath Port Talbot, Swansea, Rhondda Cynon Taf and Carmarthenshire are among those taking the measures after reports of people not following the social distancing guidelines.

And among the bigger attractions shutting their gates are Margam Country Park in Port Talbot and Gnoll Country Park in Neath.

Rob Jones, Leader of Neath Port Talbot Council, said the parks in the county borough would be closed for the next four weeks , stressing "it is imperative we heed Government advice to stay at home where possible and adopt social distancing measures".

He added: "We have a clear opportunity now to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus and we must all play our part to keep our communities safe and well.”

Neighbouring council Swansea has revealed that all its playgrounds and smaller play facilities across the city are closing while larger parks and beaches will remain accessible for now for those who are not advised to self-isolate.

In a Twitter post, Leader of RCT Council, Andrew Morgan, said children's playgrounds in the county borough would be shutting and parks could follow.

He tweeted: "Over the weekend I have seen numerous photos and received reports of people not adhering to the social distancing guidelines as we attempt to reduce the spread of the coronavirus.

"The social distancing advice is there for a reason - people are falling ill and people with underlying health issues are dying as a result of the continued transmission of the virus, and it is absolutely imperative to minimise the contact people have with one another in order to slow the continuing trend."

He said that people should not be treating the period "as a public holiday".

"Unfortunately, I am now instructing the measure to close all play areas in the interests of public safety, and if necessary, we will go further and close all parks unless social distancing is taken seriously."

Public notices will now be placed in all play areas.

Carmarthenshire County Council also tweeted its latest coronavirus guidance for residents which includes the news that all country parks would be closing from Sunday.

They include Pembrey Country Park, Llyn Llech Owain, Mynydd Mawr Woodland Park and Parc Howard. It also applies to enclosed spaces across the Millennium Coastal Park, such as the playground in North Dock.

Although staff at Pembrey Country Park have already stopped taking bookings for new arrivals, the closure of the park means people making use of seasonal campsite pitches will also be asked to leave as soon as they are able.

Cllr Peter Hughes Griffiths, Executive Board Member for Culture, Sport and Tourism, said: “This is an unprecedented move, but we have had to make this difficult decision to protect our staff and visitors.

“We do appreciate that people will need fresh air and exercise, but unfortunately we are no longer able to provide our outdoor facilities safely."
