Welsh company fined £80,000 for making thousands of nuisance calls

A Welsh company has been fined a whopping £80,000 after making thousands of nuisance calls to people who had asked not to receive them.

Rain Trading Limited (RTL), a sales company based in Lampeter, Ceredigion, was fined after it made 320,558 outbound calls between January 1 and November 29 2018.

Out of those calls, 270,774 were to Telephone Preference Service registered numbers.

All the nuisance calls related to the sale of loft insulation and a total of 99 complaints were logged.

The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) found that those who complained "suffered rude, antagonistic and potentially intimidating" behaviour from the callers which "is likely to have" caused distress.

Ken Macdonald, Head of ICO Regions said "the law is clear", companies that wish to market their products should only telephone customers who want to receive calls.

She added: “Naivety and ignorance, as we found in this case, is simply not a valid defence and RTL’s reckless approach towards electronic marketing compliance falls far short of the standard we expect to see.

”We will continue to pursue companies that cause distress to individuals by flouting the law”.
