Welsh castle with dark recent history is now going to auction

A 16th Century castle with a dark recent history is now set for auction.

Pencoed Castle in Llanmartin, near Newport, had been owned by millionaire businessman Peter Morgan.

But the developer was jailed in 2016 for the murder of escort Georgina Symonds in a property on the grounds of the castle.

Now the castle and surrounding buildings on the estate are set to go to auction - with a guide price of just under £1m.

It is not known if Morgan - who is serving a 25 year jail sentence - still owns the property.

The property will go to auction on September 17 with Allsop.

Under the listing there is planning permission in place to restore the castle, convert the outbuildings to offices and develop 12 new dwellings.

The total site area is 26.23 Hectares (64.8 Acres).

Pencoed Castle is a ruined Tudor mansion, largely dating from the 16th century.

There had been plans in the late 1990s to create a giant theme park at the site and surrounding grounds but 'Legend Court' failed to secure planning permission.

The site was put up for sale in 2001, and bought by businessman Peter Morgan for £1.7m, who planned to restore the building.
