Welsh and Scottish rugby offer financial support to clubs - but RFU stops short

English rugby won’t be following its Welsh and Scottish counterparts in offering financial support to clubs to fight the impact of coronavirus - for now at least.

The Welsh Rugby Union has confirmed grant payments due at the end of April will be made and high-priority cases entitled to emergency funding.

Clubs in the Principality will also receive an additional £1,000 as part of the WRU’s commitment to “do everything possible to safeguard the future of our game in Wales”.

Scottish Rugby has opened a £500,000 hardship fund and will also bring forward collective club support payments of more than £500,000 by a month, to April from May.

The Rugby Football Union said only that it is “investigating a range of options to provide support for clubs” and that they “hope” to be in a position to elaborate next week.
