Welsh and Scottish Labour leaders refuse to back Starmer ahead of election

  • Welsh First Minister Eluned Morgan has suggested that Sir Keir Starmer's leadership could lead to Labour losing control of the Senedd for the first time, saying that he “comes up as an issue on the doorstep”.
  • Ms Morgan refused to endorse Sir Keir as Labour leader beyond the present moment, declining to say if he would lead the party into the next general election.
  • Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar also expressed “anger and disappointment” with Westminster politics, saying that a vote for Labour in Scotland is not an endorsement of Sir Keir.
  • Reports indicate a plot by Labour MPs to oust Sir Keir following the local election results, with backbenchers said to be planning to demand his resignation and a departure date.
  • Sir Keir acknowledged a “challenge” for Labour in the upcoming local elections across England, Scotland, and Wales, where thousands of seats are being contested.
