Welsh actor cast as Prince Philip in last episode of Netflix drama The Crown

Welsh actor Jonathan Pryce will play Prince Philip in the last episode of The Crown.

The Oscar-nominated actor, who also stared in Game of Thrones, will join the Netflix drama for for Seasons 5 and 6.

He will star opposite Imelda Staunton, who has also been confirmed to step in to play the next Queen Elizabeth II.

Lesley Manville will also be joining the cast to play the role of Princess Margaret.

Pryce will succeed Tobias Menzies and Matt Smith, the actors who have played the Duke of Edinburgh in the first four seasons.

Season 4 of the Left Bank Pictures franchise is set to air later in the year.

Earlier this year Pryce was nominated for an Oscar following his performance in The Two Popes.

His performance of Pope Francis opposite Anthony Hopkins also saw him gain a nod at the Golden Globes.

Game of Thrones fans will know him as High Sparrow, while other well-known roles of his include leading Terry Gilliam’s dystopian drama Brazil.

He may also be remembered for playing a Bond villain in Tomorrow Never Dies.
