Well-wishers raise £60k for newlywed widow of 'hero' PC Andrew Harper as murder probe continues

Well-wishers have come together to raise over £60,000 for the family and widow of PC Andrew Harper, who was allegedly murdered on duty.

The 28-year-old died from multiple injuries after being dragged by a vehicle while attending to a reported burglary in Berkshire, at around 11.30pm on Thursday night.

As donations come in thick and fast in memory of the officer, murder investigators continue to question 10 suspects, including a 13-year-old boy.

One well-wisher on the Just Giving page , which has already achieved 81 per cent of its £75k target in just one day, said: "A true hero - Andrew - unbearably sad."

Another, who donated £40, said: "I’m so sorry for your loss, Andrew is part of our emergency services family & its rocked us to our core! Sending love & light to you all at this awful time."

The fundraiser, set up by the Thames Valley Police Federation, says: "Police officers all over Thames Valley and the rest of the UK go to work each and every day to do their duty.

"We are courageous, caring and compassionate. We confront danger on a daily basis. We know there is a risk when we put on the uniform but we do so as we are proud to protect the public.

"Sadly on very rare and horrendous occasions a colleague makes the ultimate sacrifice. We will ensure that heroism is never forgotten. All our thoughts remain with Andrew’s wife, family, friends and close colleagues."

The ten males in question, aged between 13 and 30, were arrested at a nearby caravan park within an hour of the incident, Thames Valley Police said.

Detective Superintendent Ailsa Kent said that police have been granted an extra 36 hours to question the suspects over the death of PC Harper, who joined the police as a special constable in 2010, before becoming a police officer a year later, serving in the Roads Policing Proactive Unit based at Abingdon.

PC Harper tied the knot with new wife, Lissie, just four weeks ago and was reportedly due to go on his honeymoon in a few days.

Images show the couple celebrating their wedding at Ardington House, a Georgian manor set in gardens and parkland in Oxfordshire.

This morning (Sunday, August 18), country roads near the Four Houses Corner caravan park were closed as police scoured ditches for evidence near the site where the suspects were arrested.

And, while thousands of donors contribute to the page set up in PC Harper's memory, a Virgin Money Giving page set up by the officer himself has also been flooded with donations.

He created a Virgin Money Giving page with a £500 target in aid of children suffering with cancer as he planned to tackle the 20 mile, 200 obstacle Dirty Weekend race in Peterborough next year.

But a deluge of donations has now taken the total amount raised to more than £16,000 in aid of Children with Cancer UK.

He had written: "Even if only one child benefits then it will be well and truly worth it."
