Well-Safe Solutions inks new North Sea decommissioning deal

Well-Safe Solutions has signed an agreement to plug and abandon 14 wells on the UK continental shelf.

The deal is the first scope agreed for its Well-Safe Defender semi-submersible rig, which the Aberdeen-based business bought in June.

The project, for an undisclosed value, will see the rig mobilising next March for approximately 250 days of work.

Neil Ferguson, operations director at Well-Safe Solutions, said: “This is a very exciting time for our teams, with a little over a month between Well-Safe taking ownership of the Well-Safe Defender and the signing of this contract with our latest client.”

Gavin Robinson, commercial manager at Well-Safe Solutions, added: “We are delighted to assist our client, a leading European operator, with meeting their decommissioning obligations on these historic fields.

“In addition to the clear economic benefits of this approach, we expect this work to generate approximately 60 new positions offshore, with several supporting roles also required onshore.

“This will take the total estimated headcount in Well-Safe to 330 people in early 2023.”

Earlier this summer, Well-Safe Solutions announced a well decommissioning contract with Ithaca Energy, as well as a funding boost of more than £50m, led by MW&L Capital Partners, with other new and existing investors.

This brings the total capital raised by the company to around £150m.

Separately, water management firm OWM has been awarded a two-year framework agreement to provide potable water management products and services to Well-Safe Solutions.

The agreement, which kicked off in May, will cover all three of Well-Safe Solutions decommissioning assets. The framework will have OWM cover the full cycle of water management, from initial on-board audit through to installation.
