Well-loved Edinburgh ice-cream factory Arcari's to close after decades in the business

A well-loved Edinburgh ice-cream factory is to close after satisfying locals' sweet tooths for decades.

The R Arcari factory in Portobello will close for good in a few weeks time as the current owner decides to try out a new business venture.

Initially created by Rudy Arcari, the business was hugely popular with locals who adored their signature ice cream, and claimed to have invented the iconic 99 cone.

The Arcari's ice cream shop was also a staple of Portobello High Street until it closed in 2005.

Sadly, Rudy passed away in 2014 at the age of 85, however the factory continued to operate in the year that followed with their signature recipes.

With both a factory and an ice cream van, the delicious desserts were famed in the area, with many people saddened to hear the news that the factory will close for good at the end of this month.

Despite shutting down the factory, owner Tanya has said that she "wanted a change" and has now opened a 'Doggie Day-Care' centre on the same site.

Upon hearing the news, one local said:

"Was brought up with Arcari's ice cream and lush lollies, it was the best by a mile."

Another said: "Absolutely gutted to hear this. Arcari ice cream was a massive part of my childhood memories ."
