Greene King makes 'difficult decision' to close Cross Hands pub in south Bristol

Bristol has lost some popular pubs this year including the Llandoger Trow and Somerset House, with others including The Windmill and St George's Hall set to join them.

And this weekend the city will say farewell to another well-liked boozer, one which will be mourned by people in south Bristol in particular.

It might not be the most aesthetically-pleasing pub in the city and you can definitely find better pub grub elsewhere, but the Cross Hands is a bastion of the community complete with a pool table, dart board and welcoming nature.

This weekend the family-friendly drinker will close, however, with owners Greene King confirming it has been sold.

A spokesperson for Greene King, which has owned the Bedminster Down pub since 1996, said: "As a leading pub operator and brewer, we are committed to running high quality community pubs.

"To be able to continue to invest in our estate, from time to time we have to make difficult decisions and therefore after much consideration we decided to put Cross Hands on the market.

"A sale has been agreed and the pub will close after trading on Sunday, October 6. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our customers who visited over the years.

"Our team at the pub are aware of the situation and we are working to find positions for as many of them as possible at other Greene King pubs in the area."

A number of people on social media have speculated that the pub has been purchased by Bristol-based demolition contractors Wring Group, but this has not yet been confirmed.

Bristol Live has contacted the firm to ask for further information.

Others say the pub will undergo a refurbishment once it has closed and reopen later this year, which Bristol Live is also investigating.
