Well-known village pub closes down amid cost of living crisis

The owners of a popular village pub which survived Covid and endured repeated floods have decided to call it a day. The landlords of the Sportsmans Rest in Peterston-super-Ely in the Vale of Glamorgan are retiring after 18 years behind the bar citing the end of their lease on the premises along with rocketing energy and other bills.

The pub has frequently fallen victim to flooding and in late 2019 and early 2020 found itself flooded three times in quick succession after heavy rains caused the River Ely to overflow its banks. Locals responded by lending a hand to mop up the mess and get the business open again.

Now the owners have decided to call time for the final time. In a heartfelt Facebook post landlord Huw Jones thanked customers for their support over the years and described the closure of the bar as the "end of an era". He wrote: "As many of you may be aware after 18 years at the Sportsman's Rest our lease has come to an end and due to the escalating energy bills and overheads etc we have decided not to renew the lease but to retire and call it a day. It will be an end of an era for us and also the village.

"Sandra, Sam, all the staff, and myself will miss you all dearly I'm sure. Thank you all for the fantastic and generous support you have given us over the years and the help with mopping up after the numerous floods and keeping the pub going through takeaway meals during Covid-19 lockdowns."

The post finished with the owners inviting regulars to the bar for a farewell drink. It is understood new tenants are currently being sought for the business.
