Well-known Eccles shop referred to Trading Standards for price-hiking during Covid-19 pandemic

A well-known Salford shop has been referred to Trading Standards for inflating its prices during the coronavirus pandemic.

Concerns were raised over Best Bargain Eccles hiking the prices of its essential products in recent weeks.

Police visited the Fox Street store and asked the owners to consider closing, which they obliged to do.

However the shop reopened a short time later and is permitted to stay open due to being a homeware store, officers say.

Police confirmed that complaints about Best Bargain Eccles, along with other shops in the town centre, have now been referred to Trading Standards for inflating prices during the Covid-19 outbreak.

Sergeant Judd, of the Eccles neighbourhood policing team, said: “I am aware of local residents concerns re. Raising of prices at this store and possibly others in the town centre.

“Last week, my officers visited and asked the owners to consider closing which they did. They have now re-opened.

“Just to update you all, this store, as a retailer of homeware, is allowed to stay open under the public health protection act, so we can't insist it is closed.

“However, due to the inflated prices of some products, the store and any others that artificially raise prices is being dealt with by Trading Standards.”
