The drama on Wisteria Lane is officially back on the menu, and it’s about damn time. Disney’s Onyx Collective is developing a brand new Desperate Housewives spin-off, and if you’ve been yearning for more suburban secrets, shiny SUVs, and neighbours who are just a bit too interested in your recycling habits, your prayers have been answered.
The new series is reportedly called Wisteria Lane (yes, they’re keeping the iconic street name — no need to update your GPS just yet). This isn’t a reboot with the original cast pretending they’re still in their forties. According to Deadline it’s about five new frenemies living on the same picture-perfect cul-de-sac, written by Natalie Chaidez (who worked on The Flight Attendant, so expect some proper twists).
Kerry Washington is reportedly executive producing alongside Pilar Savone and Chaidez, but there’s no word yet if she’ll be trading her power suits for pastel cardigans and a spot on the street herself.
Will any OGs return to the Desperate Housewives reboot?
If you’re hoping to see Teri Hatcher, Marcia Cross, Felicity Huffman, or Eva Longoria popping up with a cake and a cryptic warning, don’t hold your breath.
There are “no plans for any of the original cast members to appear on the new Wisteria Lane” at this stage. But that hasn’t stopped Eva Longoria from putting her hand up for a comeback. “I would be the first person” to sign up, she told Stellar Magazine earlier this month.
On Watch What Happens Live this past week, Longoria was even more candid when asked who from the OG would be least likely to sign up for a reboot: “Marc Cherry, our creator. He feels like we’ve exhausted the characters…
“I can’t sleep with any more people on that street. I have slept with every person on the street, as did Nicollette Sheridan.”
With Longoria’s WWHL interview being so recent, I’m officially freaking out that they didn’t consult her at all for the reboot (or she’s just really good at creating mystery). Either way, I will in fact riot if I don’t see at least some of the OGs come back. Bree and Susan still need justice!!
What about Marc Cherry?
Marc Cherry, the original creator, isn’t involved in the new series (yet), but he’s not ruling out a return. He told PEOPLE in November that “about 70,000 people” have asked him about a reboot, and he’s got a few ideas, but “I would probably want to do the idea maybe in an earlier decade. Because the character I miss writing the most is actually Wisteria Lane. That was the most fun playground anyone in the history of television has ever had, because we owned the whole street”.
Why now?
This all comes hot on the heels of Desperate Housewives’ 20th anniversary last year, which sent nostalgia levels soaring and got everyone speculating about a reboot. The original show was a massive hit, running from 2004 to 2012, racking up 38 Emmy nominations and a win for Felicity Huffman. Also I have no data to back this up, but I feel that there has been an uptick in Gabrielle Solis edits on TikTok recently (as there should be).
Wisteria Lane is still in development, but it’s set to stream on Hulu (which will probably mean Disney+ for us Aussies — otherwise get your VPNs ready). There’s no casting news yet, but with Kerry Washington and Natalie Chaidez at the helm, expect a fresh batch of secrets, scandals, and probably a few bodies buried under those perfectly manicured lawns.
