CHICAGO _ Welington Castillo's throwing error in the top of the seventh inning put the Royals in position to grab the lead Monday night at Guaranteed Rate Field.
The White Sox catcher more than made up for the miscue in the bottom of the eighth.
Castillo hit a go-ahead two-run homer to right field and the Sox held on for a 5-4 victory in front of 12,533 fans.
Castillo picked the perfect time for his first home run of the season, snapping a 0-for-23 streak. The Sox won for the third time in four games.
An inning earlier, with the game tied 3, Sox reliever Manny Banuelos walked Billy Hamilton. Always a threat on the bases, Hamilton stole second and raced to third when Castillo's throw got away.
Whit Merrifield followed with a sacrifice fly to give the Royals a 4-3 lead.
Tim Anderson started the eighth-inning rally for the Sox with a double. Anderson had three hits, two singles and the double. He leads the majors with a .453 batting average.
Castillo followed with his 359-foot home run.
Alex Colome survived a leadoff walk in the ninth, striking out two to earn his fourth save of the season and the 100th of his career.
The White Sox got a solid start from pitcher Ervin Santana, who got no decision. He gave up a pair of home runs in the second inning as the Royals jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Santana has allowed five home runs in his two outings.
The White Sox rallied for three runs in the fifth. Yoan Moncada tied the game when he drove in Leury Garcia with an RBI single.
