'Welcome to our village wee one': NZ Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern gives birth to baby girl

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has given birth to a baby girl.

Ms Ardern shared a photo of her and partner Clarke Gayford with their daughter on Instagram on Thursday afternoon.

She captioned the image:

"Welcome to our village wee one."

She said the baby arrived at 4:45pm (local time), weighing 3.31kg.

"Thank you so much for your best wishes and your kindness," Ms Ardern said.

"We're all doing really well thanks to the wonderful team at Auckland City Hospital."

Ms Ardern is just the second woman to give birth to a child while leading a country.

More to come.
