Welcome to Ayrshire's house of horrors as home left abandoned in terrible state

Welcome to the house of horrors.

This house in Kilwinning’s Woodwynd, was abandoned for more than a year, as it fell into a state of disrepair.

The pictures show a rubbish pile, completely covering floors, takeaway boxes and empty juice bottles lay among other household mess.

Kitchen worktops were left to rot and the garden became an overgrown jungle.

But the once privately owned home is an eyesore is no more after North Ayrshire Council stepped in.

The work being carried out by the council to breathe new life into empty properties is featuring in a new BBC TV series.

TV presenter Matt Allwright – best known for Rogue Traders – visited North Ayrshire to shine a spotlight on the council’s private sector housing team for the new BBC One series, Britain’s Housing Scandal.

With many disused properties lying empty across the UK, Matt discovered the work being done to bring derelict homes back into use here.

The council recently acquired the Woodwynd and a second property in Irvine which will now be transformed from derelict shells into ‘fantastic family homes’.

Councillor Jim Montgomerie said: “We know how empty properties can be a blight on local communities and attract anti-social behaviour.

“Sometimes, these properties are left for years, and that can become a real issue for neighbours.

“However, we’ve made great progress into dealing with this issue and, over the last three years, we have managed to bring 462 empty properties back into use.

“That’s an incredible figure and testament to the outstanding work going on here in North Ayrshire as part of our continuing efforts to regenerate our communities.”

Britain’s Housing Scandal is airing every day this week on BBC One. Viewers can catch up on the TV show by searching for Britain’s Housing Scandal on BBC iPlayer.
