Welcome back for Newcastle's 'ambassadors'

BACK ON THE STREET: NEWCrew volunteer Sue Slade with Taree resident Tony Jeffery and his granddaughter at New Annual.

A TEAM of Newcastle volunteers dedicated to greeting the city's visitors have returned from a pandemic-induced hiatus.

The NEWCrew is back in action for the New Annual festival, operating in a virus-safe way as they act as ambassadors for the region.

The program was established in 2017 to help visitors on the ground.

Sue Slade began volunteering about three years ago to keep busy and give back. The former disability worker said she wanted to spread her love for Newcastle.

"I love Newcastle and I'm a real people person, so it is not hard talking about our city to visitors," she said. "It's been a long 12 months since we've been able to volunteer with NEWCrew, but it's great to be back now to catch up with some of the other volunteers and be a part of New Annual."
