Weiss: Boston Celtics hope to extend Payton Pritchard

The Boston Celtics evidently hope to keep backup guard Payton Pritchard around a little longer than the length of his current contract, with The Athletic’s Jared Weiss reporting that the Celtics are in talks with the Oregon alum’s representation about a new deal with Boston.

Per Weiss, the “Celtics have opened extension talks with Pritchard but still have a gap to close to reach an agreement” on a rookie contract extension for the West Linn native. Pritchard is likely looking at a larger and more consistent role than he had last season as he enters what would otherwise be a contract season.

Getting Pritchard on a new deal before the season starts would help get the reserve guard on the same page as his team in terms of goals for the season ahead with no new deal to play for.

It would also add to the value of Pritchard’s contract should Boston look to move on from their relationship should the team deem his services — or contract ballast — would be better off domiciled on another roster.
