'Weirdo' man praised for sitting next to sleeping girl on train

A woman has taken to Twitter to praise a man she thought to be a ‘weirdo’ for sitting beside her while she was asleep on the train.

After falling asleep whilst sitting at a table seat on an almost empty train, the woman was left shocked when she woke to find a man sitting opposite her.

She said: “My story from yesterday.

“I fell asleep last night during my four hour trip back to London. Fell asleep hard. Table seat all to myself so had my bag on the table opened, my phone sat on the table. My AirPods in my ears with music on. PASSED OUT.

“I woke up as we were getting into Euston and noticed that apart from a group of very drunk very noisy lads on the far side of the carriage there was one other man. And he’s chosen to sit opposite me on the table seat.

“My mind raced. Are all my things all here. Was he filming me. Etc.

“As I got off the ‘weirdo man who decided to sit next to a sleeping girl on a nearly empty carriage’ tapped me on the shoulder.

“’I didn’t mean to startle you, just didn’t want you sleeping unattended’ He’d sat there the whole journey to make sure I was able to sleep safely.”

The story has since generated almost six thousand retweets and over 68 thousand likes as people praised the man for his act of kindness.

One user said: “What an absolute gent. The last time I fell asleep on the tube someone dug through my pockets and nicked my phone after a 12 hour shift.”

Another said: “This is fabulous! Society makes us start with the worst possible scenario when in fact human beings are (the vast majority) considerate, kind and caring. What a lovely gesture by this kind person #caring #faithinhumannature”

The tweet also prompted others to share their stories of how they attempted to protect unaccompanied people who were sleeping or had been drinking.

She said: “I do this when I’m on the tube home, it’s late and a drunk woman is sleepy/unaware of her surroundings/otherwise not at her best.

“We’ve all been there and frankly we all deserve to be there every now and then – safely. So I deliberately sit nearby because I know I’ll protect her.”
