Weird secret 'safe words' Hollywood actresses like to use when sex scenes get too much

Sex scenes may be titillating for the audience, but in front of the cameras, it's a different story .

When describing the work that goes into a raunchy scene, one word which actors bring up a LOT is "awkward".

One scene may have to be acted over and over again with a crew watching you do your thing while wearing a "nude patch" - plus there's nowhere hide from the lighting.

According to one LA-based British actress, sex scenes can also be uncomfortably intense.

So much so, many female actors will use 'safe words' on set, The Telegraph reports.

Also known as 'intimacy coordinators', the actress revealed, "Loads more directors are using ICs.

'But not all, which is why a lot of us have started using 'safe words' to stop filming if a scene's getting too heated. Some even have them written into their contracts."

Popular examples are "pineapple", "sweet potato" and "mayonnaise".

So why the food words?

Continuing, the actress said: "It's about using an everyday word to deflate a high-pressure situation."

It's not just the actors involved who can feel awkward - some sex scenes have also had audiences hiding behind their cushions.

Recently Game of Thrones fans found themselves divided over a scene in the latest episode which sees Arya Stark lose her virginity.

And if you've ever accidentally watched a sex scene with your parents present, you'll know few things can be as cringe-worthy.
