Weir Group wins £95 million mine maintenance contract in Western Australia

Glasgow-based engineering firm Weir Group has won a £95m contract with the Iron Bridge magnetite mine project in Western Australia.

The contract is to provide components and services to the mine for continuing maintenance.

The Iron Bridge project is a AUD$2.6bn dollar (£1.95bn) joint venture between iron ore company Fortescue Metals Group’s subsidiary FMG Magnetite and Formosa Steel and is located in the Pilbara region, some 145 kilometres south of Port Hedland.

The contract starts in 2022 and follows a £100m contract win for original equipment last year, including energy-efficient grinding rolls that enable dry processing of ore.

Weir Minerals president Ricardo Garib said: “This is another landmark order for Weir. Having helped design an energy and water efficient magnetite processing plant, we are delighted to provide operational support for Iron Bridge from 2022.”

Stuart Hayton, managing director of Weir Minerals Netherlands, where the grinding equipment is designed and manufactured, added: “This is an important project for Weir and for the broader mining industry.

“As the mining industry evolves we are committed to continuing to innovate, reducing miners’ costs and environmental impact.”

Founded in 1871, Weir Group has about 13,000 employees in more than 60 countries.
