Weir Group takes prize for Deal of the Year at our big night

Weir Group won the coveted Deal of the Year accolade at the Scottish Business Insider Deals and Dealmakers Awards .

The Glasgow-based engineering firm won over the judges with their takeover of ESCO Corporation - the biggest deal in its near-150 year history.

The panel described it as "a truly transformational deal with any dimensions" - no surprise having earlier handed the firm the award in the Transformational Deal category.

Acquisitive Company of the Year went to Clydesdale Bank owner CYBG for its takeover of Virgin Money, which will use the brand to become a UK-wide operator. Judges praised "important contribution to the wider Scottish economy with the commitment to keep the head office and digital operations in Scotland".

Corporate Finance Team of the Year went to EY, which "demonstrated strong dealmaking capability on a number of large complex deals" which involved fellow finalists, Weir, John Menzies, QTS, Incremental and Cyberhawk.

Funder of the Year BGF was praised for "focus and commitment to sourcing equity deals in Scotland, having backed 30 business since BGF was set up in 2011 and this was another strong year for them".

Enermech won Sale of the Year for its acquisition by the Carlyle Group which provied a "fillip to the whole North Sea sector" against a tough industry backdrop.

Emerging Dealmaker of the Year Usman Ali of Clydesdale Bank was recognised for his networking and relationship building and "passion for doing deals".

The SME Transformational Deal of the Year went to Incremental for its management buyout, backed by Dunedin.

Brodies tool Legal Advisor of the Year for its Premier Oil deal that "set a world precedent doing regulatory work that had never been done before".

SEM Energy was awarded Early Stage Deal of the Year for securing investment backing from Energy Growth momentum and buying Epona Technologies and Entron technologies to create a business of complementary attributes.

Levi Roots, the man behind the Reggae Reggae range of foods that had its launchpad via TV's Dragons' Den, was the keynote speaker on an evening hosted by broadcaster Fred MacAulay at the Doubletree by Hilton Glasgow hotel.
