Weight loss expert Michael Mosley shares five surprising foods he always eats

If you've ever looked into healthy eating, you'll most likely have heard of Dr Michael Mosley. The inventor of the world-famous 5:2 diet - where you eat healthy five days and fast on the two remaining - is often full of helpful dietary tips, slowly but surely engraving his name as one of the weight loss industry's most renowned experts.

As well as offering various tips on staying fit and healthy, the TV doctor recommends the foods that dieters should always avoid if they're hoping to shed the stones - starchy carbs springs to mind. But it might surprise you to learn that the weight loss guru doesn't always avoid the full-fat option himself.

Speaking in an interview with BBC Radio Wales, Michael revealed some of the things you'll often spot in his trolley - like full fat Greek yoghurt. When asked about the items he and his wife Clare always include, he said: "I think I like to include full-fat yoghurt.

The Mirror reports that he added: "I'm a big fan particularly of Greek yoghurt because it's got more protein and more taste. I eat quite a lot of yoghurt. I also include some healthy forms of protein.

"I've turned into a major fish fan recently. I used to hate fish. You have to try to choose the sustainable stuff, but the thing about fish is it's so flexible. It's so full of good stuff - omega 3, fatty acid and things like that."

Dr Michael also makes sure that he's stocked up on oil, citing how it's 'the closest thing we have to the elixir of life in a sense that it is a fundamental part of the Mediterranean diet'. Host Behnaz Akhgar. replied: "A friend of mine has a spoonful of it every night before he goes to sleep. He swears by it."

Michael then explained that there is 'plenty of evidence' with regards to the benefits of olive oil, however, there are also a number of myths surrounding the substance. He continued: "The idea that you shouldn't cook with it because of its smoke point.

"But that's nonsense, I've looked into that. I do think it's a super healthy oil but it's also a bit expensive as well."

The dietician also said he has plenty of nuts around the house to snack on, high in protein and natural sugars while healthier than fatty chocolate. He said: "I have a very sweet tooth and given half a chance I'll be reaching for the bars of chocolate, so I have to keep them out of the house and I have nuts in the house instead to make sure that hits the spots but it isn't quite as packed with calories."

Dr Mosley finally revealed that he's a bit of a butter fiend, previously buying margarine before he 'became less convinced' it would be better for him. He explained: "The thing about butter and indeed quite a lot of dairy products is although they do have saturated fats in them they don't seem to be the unhealthy form of saturated fats so the evidence now suggests that certainly in moderation butter is a perfectly healthy thing to be consuming and like you I'm a fan of it."
