Weekly Covid cases in Lanarkshire rises for only second time this year

Weekly coronavirus cases in Lanarkshire increased last week for only the second time in 2021.

At her daily press briefing in Edinburgh on Monday, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon confirmed there had been a further 99 positive tests across the region.

As a result, there were 1023 new coronavirus cases in the county last week - 3.6 per cent more than the previous week and the first time in six weeks that Covid-19 case numbers have increased.

An increase in cases in parts of North Lanarkshire plus a sustained outbreak in Clydesdale are thought to have contributed to the increase in the prevalence of coronavirus in Lanarkshire.

Last week was the first week since cases peaked in week beginning January 4 that case numbers have increased.

Overall, Covid-19 cases in Lanarkshire are now down by 56 per cent since the peak in the week beginning January 4 when 2353 were confirmed.

Although case numbers are usually lower over the weekend, yesterday was only the second day this year that less than 100 new cases were announced in a single day.

In total, 36,181 people have tested positive for Covid-19 in Lanarkshire and 1183 people have died after testing positive.

Lanarkshire has been the worst affected region in Scotland by coronavirus with 5451.3 cases and 178.7 deaths for every 100,000 residents.
