Weekend weather: Met Office predicts heavy rain for the North East

If you're a sunseeker, the bad news is that temperatures won't be particularly impressive this weekend.

Heavy downpours and gusty winds are expected to batter the country as temperatures plummet.

Heavy rain will hit the north of the UK, while the south will see a mix of sunshine, showers and fairly high winds.

Temperatures will take another nosedive, with many areas dropping to 12C or colder in the afternoon.

Thunderstorms are also expected over the weekend and the poor weather is likely to continue into the beginning of next week.

The Met Office said there will be a mix of sunshine and potentially thundery showers on Monday, followed by possible heavy rain on Tuesday.

Met Office forecaster Richard Miles said: "It's looking quite unsettled over the weekend.

"On Saturday it'll be pretty windy, you might see gale force gusts on the south coast but inland much weaker winds.

"You might hear about Storm Miguel, which is a low pressure system named by the Spanish Met service. By the time the low pressure area gets to the UK it won't meet our criteria but our weather will still be being driven by what remains of that."

Saturday:

Further showery outbreaks of rain at first. These likely merging into more persistent rain in places through the morning, before easing later. Rather breezy at times. Maximum temperature 14 °C.

Outlook for Sunday to Tuesday:

Changeable Sunday and Monday, with some sunny spells, but also further showers. These heavy at times. Fine, dry start Tuesday, but likely turning breezy, with rain possibly spreading north later.
