Weekend weather forecast as severe warnings stop balloon fiesta flights

Thanks to two severe weather warnings heading to Bristol, the city's famous balloon fiesta ascents have been cancelled for today.

A yellow level weather warning for rain is in place for much of the UK throughout Friday with the Met Office warning about flooding and damage to houses by the rainfall.

Currently the forecaster predicts a heavy downpour overnight in Bristol with sunlight due to appear in the morning before the return of rain and possibly even lightning from midday onwards.

It has been enough for the fiesta organisers to call a preemptive cancellation of the two mass ascents planned for Friday.

It remains to be seen whether balloons will fly at all over the weekend as another warning is in place for Saturday.

While balloons flew in an unprecedented Thursday morning ascent, they were grounded for the evening and only a restricted night glow took place, with no balloons being inflated.

However earlier in the week pilot and fiesta spokesman Clive Bailey was optimistic for the rest of the event, which finishes Sunday evening.

The Met Office currently reports a severe weather warning for wind is in place for Saturday throughout the day for the south of the country as well as the midlands and Wales.

The alert includes a warning for coastal routes as well as for high-sided vehicles as well as problems for roads and possible loss of power.

While no decisions have yet been made on the fiesta running ascents on Saturday, the current weather forecasts show around a 40 per cent chance of rain through most of the day but with wind speeds of up to 23mph expected.

On Sunday it is expected to be much more settled with a chance of rain from midday until about 7pm but will largely be dry.

The temperature is not expected to drop below 20 degrees all weekend.
