Weekend toll: 6 dead, 39 wounded in shootings in Chicago

April 26--Six people were killed and at least 39 were wounded in shootings across Chicago in one of the more violent weekends the city has seen since last fall, according to police.

Among the victims were five people who were on a porch in West Englewood when someone fired shots from a vacant lot across Damen Avenue on Sunday night. Two men were pronounced dead on the scene. Three others went to area hospitals.

It was the third attack in less than a week that wounded four or more people in Chicago.

On Saturday, the daughter of a Cook County sheriff's deputy was killed in Roseland. She and two others were getting out of a car in the 11400 block of South Stewart Avenue, next to Haley Elementary Academy, when there was gunfire.

The car went to Roseland Community Hospital, where it crashed. Tiara M. Parks was shot in the head and pronounced dead at the hospital less than 15 minutes after the shooting.

The weekend appears to be the most violent in Chicago since the end of last September, when four people were killed and at least 53 were wounded, according to data compiled by the Tribune. It comes days after the city recorded its 1,000th person shot this year.

As of early Monday, at least 1,047 people have been shot in Chicago this year, compared with 620 during the same time last year. There have been at least 177 homicides this year compared with 116 a year ago.

From Friday evening to early Saturday, one person was fatally shot and five other people were shot; from Saturday afternoon to Sunday morning, two were fatally shot and 17 others were shot; from Sunday afternoon to early Monday, three people were fatally shot and 17 others were shot.
