Weekend of protests as three demonstrations planned in Nottingham city centre

Three protests are planned to take place in Nottingham city centre this weekend.

'March for Wildlife' has been organised by climate action group, Extinction Rebellion, and is described as a "family friendly event".

The march on Saturday, June 5, will commence at Nottingham railway station at 2.30pm and is set to 'block traffic' along its route in a bid to 'warn of the wildlife crisis'.

A parade will be led by a 16-foot cycle-powered ark featuring images of animals facing the threat of extinction because of global warming and habitat destruction.

This will be followed by a samba drumming band dressed as fish, and people dressed as various creatures with placards and sculptures.

At around 12pm another 'People for Palestine' protest is set to take place across the city centre.

This follows the first protest which took place on May 22, when traffic was held up in Mansfield Road as protesters marched into Old Market Square to raise awareness of the conflict between the people of Palestine and Israel.

A third demonstration, called the 'Black Lives Still Matter' march, will be held on Sunday, June 6, from 12pm.

This has been organised by the NextGen Movement.

The Extinction Rebellion protest theme ties in with World Environment Day (June 5) and aims to draw attention to the threats facing the natural world.

It is being supported by BAME Climate Champions, Nottingham Green Festival and attended by other activists from many other groups in Nottingham.

Horticulturist Tim Bonner, aged 45, will be wearing a beaver hat to the march.

He said: “Beavers were hunted to extinction in the UK for fur, meat and perfume.

"They are nature’s re-wilders. They create ponds and aid in flood prevention.

“I want to take my nephews into a countryside full of animals, insects and amphibians to explore nature's wonders, because nature is so good for our mental health.”

The Facebook event page shows around 100 people are down to attend, while there is also a similar event happening earlier the same day in Lincoln and the surrounding region.

The same march took place last week in Leicester.

To ensure the event is Covid-safe, protesters have been asked to wear a mask and bring hand sanitiser, and not to attend if feeling unwell or experiencing Covid symptoms in the previous 10 days.

The route from the station will incorporate Carrington Street, Canal Street, Maid Marian Way, Friar Lane, Long Row, Queen Street, Upper/Lower Parliament Street, Broad Street, George Street, Pelham Street, High Street, Bridlesmith Gate, St Peter's Street, Castle Gate, Spaniel Row and then returning via Maid Marian Way to the station.
