Weekend hazard reduction burns planned in Hunter

Multiple hazard reduction burns have been planned in the Hunter on Saturday as fire crews aim to take advantage of appropriate conditions.

A 9.12 hectare burn has been planned for Thornton, with the local Rural Fire Service warning residents about smoke in the area.

"Just a reminder that Thornton Brigade is participating alongside multiple other Brigades with a hazard reduction near the Avalon estate," Thornton RFS posted to its Facebook page.

"You will see smoke in the area but please only call 000 if you see fire unattended by a fire truck.

"Remember to shut windows and keep washing off the line."

Another prescribed burn has been planned for Wakefield in Lake Macquarie LGA. The 33ha burn is set to take place in bushland next to McCanns and Miller roads.

"This activity will consist of prescribed burning of vegetation to reduce the bush fire fuel and assist in reducing the intensity and adverse impact of bush fires in extreme weather conditions," NSW Rural Fire Service - Central Coast District said in a social media post.

The service said that as the prescribed burn will generate smoke, hot embers and heat, it is important that residents near by consider the following:

  • Keep doors and windows closed to prevent smoke entering homes and keep outdoor furniture under cover to prevent ember burns
  • Ensure pets have a protected area, retract pool covers to prevent ember damage and remove washing from clotheslines
  • If you are driving a vehicle, slow down, keep windows up and turn headlights on
  • If you have asthma or a lung condition, reduce outdoor activities.

Residents may experience discoloured tap water due to water being extracted by fire fighters from the water mains.
