Climate activists have chained themselves to a barricade in the middle of a central Melbourne street, disrupting peak hour traffic.
The demonstrators staged a sit-down on the intersection of Flinders Lane and Queen Street on Tuesday as part of week-long Extinction Rebellion protests.
A group of three women was seen chained to a metal barricade in the middle of the CBD street. At least one of the activists had a bike lock around her neck.
A number of protesters have since been detained, including a man in a wheelchair.
The road has been closed in both directions as dozens of officers attempt to move on the protesters.
Assistant Commissioner Luke Cornelius said about 2000 police members have been tasked with keeping an eye on the climate protests throughout the week.
The movement wants the government to declare a climate emergency and for it to commit to reducing greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2025.
Acting Premier James Merlino warned the group they risked getting the public offside with their non-violent resistance tactics.
"If you disrupt people's lives, that's not a great way to win an argument," he told reporters on Tuesday.
