Saturday, Sept. 14

Air Force at Colorado

1 p.m. ET, TV: Pac-12 Network | Get Tickets
Line: Colorado -3 | Staff Picks

Final: Air Force 30, Colorado 24 (OT)

Recap (Sean O’Toole): The Pac-12 Network can thank Air Force for my monthly subscription to their network. Well, that and a few other MWC cameos but, really, it was all about the Week 3 tilt between the Buffs and Falcons. And while we’re handing out “thank yous”, Colorado can send a few to Air Force for allowing the game to be as close as it was. Don’t get me wrong, I love an overtime thriller, especially when my completely biased rooting interest wins. But this game didn’t need to get to overtime.

It took a lot of help from some sloppy Air Force play, in particular an end of the half ‘gimme’ touchdown-turned-interception as time expired and then full-on penalty-laden implosion in what could have been a 4th-quarter clinching drive. But the 2019  Cadets had this one covered. I hope the fans in Boulder don’t have to wait another 11 presidential terms to get a shot at redemption. This is a game worth playing for these Colorado schools.

New Mexico at Notre Dame

2:30 p.m. ET, TV: NBC | Get Tickets
Line: Notre Dame -35 | Staff Picks

Final: Notre Dame 66, New Mexico 14

Recap (Matthew Kenerly): The Lobos offense got off to an extremely sluggish start on Saturday afternoon, so despite a surprisingly strong defensive effort in the first half, the Fighting Irish eventually found some explosiveness on offense and ran away with things in a blowout win.

Sheriron Jones got his first start of 2019 and completed just 4-of-15 passes for 19 yards with three interceptions. He eventually gave way to Tevaka Tuioti (6-13-132-0-0), who did create some big plays after the game was out of reach and may have restarted the quarterback controversy yet again.

UNLV at Northwestern

3:30 p.m. ET, TV: Big Ten Network | Get Tickets
Line: Northwestern -19.5 | Staff Picks

Final: Northwestern 30, UNLV 14

Recap (Matthew Kenerly): An inspiring first half gave way to a frustrating second half as the Rebels, who trailed just 16-14 at halftime, ended the day with three turnovers in a loss to the Wildcats.

Running back Charles Williams had yet another 100-yard day, finishing with 144 yards on 16 carries, but he was a non-factor in that second half while Armani Rogers (16-26-120-0-1) fumbled twice and threw an interception.

Colorado State at Arkansas

4 p.m. ET, TV: SEC Network | Get Tickets
Line: Arkansas -9.5 | Staff Picks

Final: Arkansas 55, Colorado State 34

Recap (Josh Fredlund): Colorado State kept the game close for 3.5 quarters but the Arkansas Razorbacks pulled away at the end of the game. After Collin Hill went down with a knee injury, it looked like Patrick O’Brien would step in and keep the offense running. The Arkansas defense has other ideas as they kept the Rams in check and won the game for the Razorbacks.

It looked like the game would turn into a shootout when both teams scored within the first four minutes of the game and it did. The Rams just happened to be on the wrong end of the scoreboard at the end of it. Marvin Kinsey has a career day with 20 carries for 180 yards and a score, but the Rams didn’t have enough in the tank at the end of the game

Idaho at Wyoming

5 p.m. ET, TV: ESPN3 | Get Tickets
Line: NL | Staff Picks

Final: Wyoming 21, Idaho 16

Recap (Jesse Tachiquin): The Cowboys survived an unexpected test from the Idaho Vandals, 21-16. Wyoming’s offense was saved by a huge day from Trey Smith. The Louisville transfer accounted for 157 of the Cowboys 237 rushing yards and scored 2 TD’s. Sean Chambers and the receiving corps did nothing to change opinions about the atrocity of an offense they have fielded. Chambers finished 4-of-12 for 50 yards and the receivers added multiple drops.

The Cowboys started in a 10-0 hole, but stormed back with two quick touchdowns in the second quarter to get a 14-10 lead. The Vandals drove deep into Wyoming territory on their second to last drive but dropped a wide open TD pass and had to settle for a field goal. The Cowboys (3-0) travel to Tulsa next week to take on the Golden Hurricane for a 2:30 CT/ 1:30 MT kickoff on CBSSN.

Weber State at Nevada

7 p.m. ET, TV: ESPN3 | Get Tickets
Line: NL | Staff Picks

Final: Nevada 19, Weber State 13

Recap (Brandon Blake): It was not pretty, but the Wolf Pack leaned on a strong performance from the defense to defeat the Weber State Wildcats, 19-13, on Saturday afternoon in Reno.

The Wolf Pack defense held Weber State to only 137 yards total offense and 1-for-12 on third down conversions. The Wolf Pack offense did rack up 453 yards of total offense, but struggled at times against a very game Wildcats defense. Wolf Pack quarterback Carson Strong completed 30 of 44 passes for 299 yards passing and threw no touchdowns while throwing two interceptions. The Nevada running game did most of the heavy lifting as they tallied up 153 yards rushing for the afternoon.

With the win, the Wolf Pack improve their record to 2-1 for the season and now will travel to El Paso, Texas, to take on the UTEP Miners next Saturday.

Hawaii at Washington

7:30 p.m. ET, TV: Pac-12 Network | Get Tickets
Line: Washington -21.5 | Staff Picks

Final: Washington 52, Hawaii 20

Recap (Brandon): When it rains in Seattle, it pours: Washington dominated the Rainbow Warriors in the first half and never looked back. Jacob Eason threw three touchdowns and the Husky offense was in cruise control pretty much all game.

On the other abysmal side, Cole McDonald threw three three picks and could not get the offense going against one of the best defenses he’ll see all year. We will pump the brakes until Mountain West play to see if there needs to be a change at quarterback.

San Diego State at New Mexico State

8 p.m. ET, TV: FloSports ($) or FuboTV (maybe, it is on Fox Sports Arizona Plus) | Get Tickets
Line: New Mexico State +15.5 | Staff Picks

Final: San Diego State 31, New Mexico State 10

Recap (Matthew Kenerly): The usual Aztec formula for success worked wonders in Las Cruces, as SDSU’s defense and ground game led the way in an easy win over the Aggies.

The defense racked up seven sacks and nine tackles for loss while holding NMSU to just 5.1 yards per play. Juwan Washington, meanwhile, didn’t see the field but that proved not to be a problem as both Jordan Byrd and Chance Bell topped 100 yards while the team racked up 291 total rushing yards.

Portland State at Boise State

10:15 p.m. ET, TV: ESPN2 | Get Tickets
Line: Boise State -31.5 | Staff Picks

Final: Boise State 45, Portland State 10

Recap: (Erik Smiley) It’s hard to find a downside to a 35-point win, but Boise State came out sluggish both on offense and defense. Luckily, John Hightower and special teams got the Broncos jumpstarted with a 98-yard kickoff return touchdown.

The offensive line, missing both Ezra Cleveland and John Ojukwu, allowed an open season on Hank Bachmeier for the third straight game. Bachmeier didn’t help their situation by holding the ball longer than he should have and paid for it by getting hit 16 times in the first half.  Chase Cord got some prolonged game action in the second half and looked sharp as the offense moved well under his lead. With Cord in charge, the offense focused mostly on the running game but they were able to hit on some big pass plays.

The defense didn’t take as long to get into mid-game form and largely shut down the Vikings after the first quarter. The score is something to be happy about; 45-10 looks good and getting some backups in is great with a Friday night game coming up this week. There is room for improvement, but it is encouraging that the Broncos were able to get their rhythm earlier in the game than they had. Hopefully, that trend continues.
