'Wee warrior' Mekala Osborne sitting up just months after being given five per cent survival chance

An East Lothian woman who was given just a five per cent chance of survival seven months ago has sat up unaided for the first time as she continues her recovery.

Mekala Osborne was travelling around Vietnam when she became seriously ill in September. The 22-year-old began suffering with a sore throat before the virus developed into severe pneumonia – leaving her fighting for her life.

She was put in an induced coma and moved to a hospital in Singapore. Generous donors raised £12,000 allowing her family to fly out to be with her as she received life-saving treatment.

Mekala was then flown home and spent 117 days in Edinburgh Royal Infirmary to continue her recovery, before moving to the Astley Ainslie Rehabilitation Hospital last month.

As reported by the Daily Record, the fitness instructor, who is from Prestonpans, has now beaten the odds having sat up unaided for the first time.

Family friend Dave Martin shared details on social media, posting: "Well how's about this for an Easter rising.

"Yes Mekala is sitting up for the first time today.

"And even managed to have a shower.

"There is nothing stopping this wee warrior.

"She has seen the light at the end of the tunnel and is determined to reach it as soon as possible.

"What a great achievement. So let's cheer her on."
