Wednesday's recap: White Sox 9, Reds 4

March 19--The summary

White Sox left-hander Jose Quintana received a round of applause Wednesday after giving up one earned run over 4-2/3 innings in a 9-4 victory over the Reds. But the big smile on his face afterward was because of his first hit in a major league setting -- an RBI single to right field off Jason Marquis in the fifth inning.

At the plate

After starting the spring 1-for-22, third baseman Gordon Beckham had two doubles and a two-run homer. Geovany Soto and Courtney Hawkins also homered.

On the mound

Quintana lowered his spring ERA 1.59. He gave up two hits, walked one and struck out three.

In the field

After spending much of his time working in the outfield, Emilio Bonifacio started at second base and committed two errors.

Key number

9.82. ERA for new Sox closer David Robertson this spring. After walking the leadoff batter in his inning of work, he gave up a two-run homer to Todd Frazier.

Crain setback

Reliever Jesse Crain is experiencing arm soreness and didn't pitch in a minor-league game Wednesday as expected. He told the Sox it was a setback but nothing alarming.

The quote

"Oh man. I'm excited and really happy. You know, I tried to put contact on the ball, putting it on the field. ... It's fun (to hit). I like it because you don't have nothing to lose." -- Quintana.

Up next

Vs. Cubs, 3:05 p.m. Friday at Camelback Ranch. LH Travis Wood vs. RH Hector Noesi.
