Stargazing Live
8pm, BBC2
Pole, dark: Friday’s Arctic total solar eclipse will affect much of northern Europe and comes billed as one of the most important astronomical events of the decade. So it’s the perfect time for science fox Brian Cox and lightspeed wit Dara O Briain to return to their command centre at Jodrell Bank, where they offer advice to amateur astronomers and make Bonnie Tyler gags ahead of the big blackout. For the first of three live episodes, they’ve also secured an impressive guest expert: original moon boy Buzz Aldrin. Graeme Virtue
The Billion Dollar Chicken Shop
9pm, BBC1
With new fried chicken eateries popping up around Britain, the chain that turned greasy drumstick residue into a finger lickin’ corporate slogan still rules the roost. KFC’s British wing includes 850 stores, a bucketful of which are explored in this series. Subjects include the manager turning KFC Havant into a Valentine’s destination, suburbanites determined to halt construction of a store in their neighbourhood and cleanliness-obsessed KFC “policeman” Brian, unfussed by the thought of a fly-on-the-wall KFC documentary. Mark Jones
Eat To Live Forever With Giles Coren
9.30pm, BBC2
The food critic undergoes three radical diets in a bid to prolong his life expectancy in this fun, informative and surprisingly rather poignant jaunt. (It’s also rather Giles: gird yourself for some lovingly detailed descriptions of his own bowel movements.) En route he meets some fruitarians, people on calorie-restricted diets and a sprightly 113-year-old man. “So, what age does your desire for sex drop then?” “I dunno, I haven’t lived that long yet.” Ali Catterall
Neighbours 30th: The Stars Reunite
10pm, Channel 5
A feast of hoons, bogans and bulldust as Channel 5 launches a celebration of the Aussie soap’s 30th anniversary. Ramsay Street’s heyday is clearly receding into the bubble-permed, rah-rah skirted past but most Brits would surely admit to a little “Neighbours period” at some point in their lives, as a daily dose of this sun-dappled suburban melodrama became irresistible. Tonight, expect an effusive cast reunion followed by two of the show’s more memorable episodes. Phil Harrison
Jodie Marsh On Women Who Pay For Sex
10pm, TLC
Sensational title ahoy: Jodie Marsh is investigating why women use male escorts. Stripper Gary shows her his penis pump, but Jodie can’t get anyone to admit to using his services so she heads to the US to investigate further. It’s not a deep exploration, but Jodie’s a decent interviewer who quickly puts her subjects at ease. “Is he good in bed?” she asks one obviously satisfied customer, who started paying for sex after she was widowed. “I’ll assume from that growl that he is.” Hannah Verdier
Community
10.05pm, Sony
Living up to its reputation as “the show they couldn’t kill”, Dan Harmon’s defiantly meta sitcom returns for its sixth season, despite being dumped by NBC. Community’s new home in the States is online (in the UK it remains on Sony), a setup that should allow Harmon to go weirder and darker than his old paymasters permitted. Details for this season-opening double bill are under wraps: what we do know is that joining Greenhill’s study group are Paget Brewster (Criminal Minds) and character actor Keith David. Gwilym Mumford
My Self-Harm Nightmare
11pm, Channel 4
This sounds like a horrifying and compelling investigation and, faced with rising rates of eating disorders and self-harm among young people, experts are keen to explore it. Their conclusion (it’s the internet) sounds a little kneejerk until you discover more about the websites apparently encouraging visitors to surpass their previous self-destructive efforts. The film pushes beyond alarmism by meeting three women who participate, and discovering the effect their online interactions have had on their illnesses. John Robinson
