Great Irish Journeys With Martha Kearney
8pm, BBC4

The second episode charting the journalist’s travels in her ancestral homeland. Delving into the works of 19th-century artist George Victor Du Noyer, who compiled numerous geological depictions of his country, Kearney discovers how its landscapes once looked, as well as exploring the changes that continue to occur. This week, she explores Northern Ireland, from Belfast’s Victoriana to the rugged nature of the Giant’s Causeway. It’s beautifully shot, and Kearney is an engaging guide. Hannah J Davies

Strangeways – Britain’s Toughest Prison Riot
9pm, BBC2

The revolt at Strangeways started on 1 April 1990 and raged for over three weeks, making it the biggest prison riot in British history. This documentary hears from inmates who led the charge and prison officers who fled for their lives. It happened 25 years ago exactly, but the reminiscences are about more than an anniversary: last week Lord Woolf, who led the inquiry that named unbearable conditions as the cause of the Strangeways protest, said our jails in 2015 are just as bad. Jack Seale

The Ladykillers: Pest Detectives
8pm, BBC2

How to create the ideal environment for rats? One answer is to do what Nottinghamshire farmer Will has done: store straw and old spuds in a barn, thus supplying both nesting material and food for the creatures. You may wish to look away when the dogs are unleashed. Elsewhere, as the series following the work of four female pest controllers continues, moths, pigeons and wasps get offed. It’s not all death and destruction, though – we also watch as a colony of honeybees is lovingly relocated. Jonathan Wright

The Billion Dollar Chicken Shop
9pm, BBC1

Can KFC grow and change, shaking off the stink of cooking oil and family buckets? Franchisees like the immaculately trimmed Acky, who owns 13 stores, thinks it’s essential for the future of the brand. As such, marketing manager Meghan has much riding on “pulled chicken”, deliciously described during one meeting as a “new format of chicken”. Elsewhere, a branch in Manchester hopes to turn round dwindling fortunes, while one in Oldbury has to bounce back from a withering inspection. Ben Arnold

DCI Banks
9pm, ITV

Stephen Tompkinson’s DCI Banks is the most stolidly humane of on-screen sleuths – you could imagine him jacking in the detective lark to present The One Show. In the first of a two-parter, he squints askance as the body of a promising student is found dumped in a ravine. Further investigations suggest he may not have been a model pupil, being involved in a racket with a shade of Breaking Bad about it. Meanwhile, a figure from Helen’s past emerges to complicate the plot further. David Stubbs

Sensitive Skin
10pm, Sky Arts 1

Canadian remake of a mid-00s BBC2 black comedy that starred Joanna Lumley. Kim Cattrall is light years from her Sex And The City days as Davina, a woman in the throes of a midlife crisis. Recently installed in a modern apartment, she and husband Al are restless and regressive, indulging in impractical furniture and weed. This opener sees them attend an art show with obnoxious friends, a friendly neighbourhood drug dealer and a dog in tow. More pacy and melodramatic than the original, although not quite as wry. Hannah J Davies

Bates Motel
9pm, Universal

It is business as usual in the new season of the Psycho prequel: Norman (Freddie Highmore) starts back at school and after a stressful first day he kicks back by cuddling up to his mum in bed. The whole thing’s darker than dark, with Norman growing closer to his schoolmate Emma before becoming distracted by Annika, a prostitute staying at the motel. He looks so troubled he makes changing Annika’s lightbulb seem like a dangerous taste of things to come, especially when he offers her a lift on a gloomy night. Hannah Verdier
