Newsnight – Labour Leaders
7pm, BBC2

The BBC’s flagship current affairs show hosts the first in a series of hustings between those, ahem, aspiring to succeed Ed Miliband as leader of the Labour party: Andy Burnham, Yvette Cooper, Liz Kendall and Jeremy Corbyn will be in attendance. The setting is Nuneaton in Warwickshire, chosen because it represents the kind of constituency Labour needs to win if it’s to oust the Conservatives from power in five years’ time. Jonathan Wright

The Auction House
8pm, Channel 4

The wealth porn continues with Lots Road Auctions’ big boss William Shuttleworth organising a singles night in a bid to boost sales for Valentine’s Day. It’s a fine excuse for the single people of Chelsea to get their glad rags on and mingle while they browse the lots. Romance is everywhere, with Bob valuing the silverware collection of a couple looking to raise funds for what could be their last holiday together. Meanwhile, self-taught painter Nigel attempts to flog his penguin-themed paintings to the super rich. Hannah Verdier

The Interceptor
9pm, BBC1

Episode two of the punchy drama about an off-the-books police squad using phone intercepts to work their way up the drug supply chain, from cocky street dealers to wholesalers. Cops in a shabby office glued to headphones might put you in mind of a certain Baltimore-set saga but while The Wire is a clear influence, principled point man Ash (OT Fagbenle) is no McNulty. Instead, by chasing down a rogue gunsmith while rocking a navy peacoat and beanie hat, he seems to be channelling Jason Statham. Graeme Virtue

Napoleon
9pm, BBC2

The second part of historian Andrew Roberts’s treatise on Napoleon gently proffers the notion that the man who was emperor of France and Italy by the time he was 35 has been unfairly painted over the centuries as a despotic megalomaniac. In fact, his rule was progressive, introducing the first proper meritocracy in France for 1,000 years by appointing low-born but capable soldiers to positions of high office. Here, Roberts dissects Napoleon’s victory at Austerlitz, where his Grand Armée pounded Alexander I’s Austro-Russian forces. Ben Arnold

Dick Cavett’s Watergate
9pm, PBS America

David Frost is not the only light entertainer to have made an improbable name for himself as a result of his grilling of Richard Nixon. As this documentary shows, former comedian Dick Cavett was among the very first US TV presenters to take seriously Woodward and Bernstein’s revelations about the break-in at the Democratic party’s Watergate headquarters, instigated by the shifty president. And, as we see in interview footage here, Cavett was the Jon Stewart of his day: charming yet tenacious. No wonder Nixon hated his guts. David Stubbs

The Bin Laden Conspiracy?
10pm, BBC2

The question mark represents a significant hedging of bets. Jane Corbin’s film assesses the apparently incredible claim made by veteran investigative journalist Seymour Hersh: that the May 2011 raid that killed Osama bin Laden was not an act of US special forces swashbuckling, but a set-piece contrived with the assistance of the al-Qaida kingpin’s hosts in Pakistani intelligence. Hersh’s claims have been widely rubbished, not just by American officialdom but by other reporters who covered the same story. Andrew Mueller

Nashville
10pm, E4

The drama is as huge as the stetsons as a pregnant Juliette lies in a hospital bed and has to decide whether to put her health or her tour first. When babydaddy Avery finds Noah (guest star Derek Hough) at her bedside he’s a little suspicious. Meanwhile, the Country Music Awards nominations are announced and Rayna’s faux-modest face when she scoops a load is pure joy. But the gossips are suggesting her career’s getting a boost from her relationship with Luke. So will “Ruke” perform on Dancing With The Stars together? Hannah Verdier
