Weddings to go ahead from July 4 with limited number of guests in new lockdown rules

Weddings will be able to take place again in England from next month.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson made the announcement in the Commons today where he outlined a number of new rules that will come into force from July 4.

Mr Johnson said that as part of places of worship reopening, services including weddings can restart with a maximum of 30 people, subject to social distancing.

Addressing MPs, he said: "I know many have mourned the closure of places of worship.

"This year Easter, Passover, and Eid all occurred during the lockdown so I'm delighted that places of worship will be able to reopen for prayer and services, including weddings with a maximum of 30 people, subject to social distancing".

However, it has not been confirmed whether this new rule for weddings includes those in a private setting, not in a place of worship.

Mr Johnson also announced that the two-metre rule will be reduced to "1m plus" from July 4, with people advised to take other precautions such as wearing face coverings.

Furthermore, he confirmed that two households can meet inside, regardless of the size of household, subject to social distancing.

The guidance means that residents can invite different sets of relatives or friends into their homes at different times, increasing the opportunity for people to see loved ones.

But Mr Johnson warned that they aren't recommending that multiple households can meet - which can be possible outside in a gathering of up to six people.
