Weddings to be allowed in Scotland again once lockdown rules relaxed

Weddings will now be allowed to take place again in Glasgow once the lockdown restrictions are relaxed by the Scottish Government.

Since the lockdown came into force, local registrars have been closed to the public to enable work to prioritise the registration of deaths to be undertaken.

But today MSPs voted to amend the Coronavirus (Scotland) (No.2) Bill to factor weddings into the lockdown legislation - meaning that weddings will be allowed to take place once the restrictions are eased.

The change, proposed by Glasgow Conservative MSP Adam Tomkins, was subsequently agreed unanimously in the Scottish Parliament today.

Speaking at Holyrood, the MSP said: “The fundamental right for a couple to get married is a human right, and not one that should be unfairly restricted.

“This may seem like a small matter in the face of the continued crisis, but it is a symbol of hope for the future.

“There are plenty of places in Scotland where couples can safely get married, with the required three other people in attendance, and a necessary social distance.

“There are couples around Scotland who want to take this next step in their lives, and now, we hope, they will be able to.”

Lockdown remains in place in Scotland until Thursday, May 28, with First Minister Nicola Sturgeon set to announce a 'road map' to easing the lockdown restrictions tomorrow.
