Wedding ring tax that could add £1,800 to your big day - and how to dodge it

Lovers looking for wedding rings online should be careful, as typing in certain keywords can hike the cost of your big day by up to £1,800.

Googling wedding and engagement rings makes sense. There is endless variety online, and getting the right one, at a good price, is important.

After all, if things go right you could be wearing it for the rest of your life.

But adding the word 'wedding' to 'women's ring' or 'men's ring' on Google means you are immediately shown much pricier jewellery - even for similar items, a Mirror Money investigation reveals.

For example, if you search for 'women's wedding rings' you are shown five rings with an average value of £1,385.10 each.

Search for 'women's rings' and you are shown items still suitable for weddings or engagements, but where the average cost is just £206 - a difference of £1,179.10.

Likewise, if you look up 'men's wedding rings' you get shown jewellery with an average cost of £785.80.

But 'men's rings' are worth just £127.40, or £658.40 less.

So not shopping around means you could spend £2,170.90 on 'wedding' rings, rather than £333.40 on 'rings' that are just as good.

Sarah Dennis, of consumer complaints service Resolver, said: "I don't think it's fair that putting the word 'wedding' in front of something means you can increase the price."

Dennis said that many sellers were increasing the price of wedding-related items, as they try to offset the lack of sales during pandemic lockdowns.

Spouses-to-be can save money not only by removing 'wedding' from searches for betrothal bands, but also by ignoring the immediately-advertised rings.

For example, searching 'women's wedding ring' and then clicking on the 'shopping' tab immediately cuts the cost of the top five items from £758 to £247.20. For men, the figures are £785.80 and £418.27.

If you look for 'women's ring', you would be charged £468.90 if you went onto the shopping tab of Google, and the figure would be £108.76 for men.

Couples due to marry soon were afforded some wiggle room this week as the 30 indoor guest cap was lifted from June 21.

But earlier this week prime minister Boris Johnson announced weddings would be able to go ahead with unlimited numbers, but not without restrictions .

This includes social distancing, which means wedding parties are at the mercy of each individual venue and how much space it has available after ensuring everyone is 2m apart.

Guests will not only be banned from dancing indoors but are 'advised' not to sing either. This includes singing hymns during the ceremony itself.

The use of reusable service sheets or books is advised against, as are collections for cash, with the Government advising people to donate using an online method.

The only dancing allowed during an indoor reception is the traditional 'first dance' and after that the venue's managers must close off the dance floor completely.
