Wedding receptions can resume next month - but there are restrictions

Boris Johnson has announced that wedding receptions can resume from August 1.

While nuptial ceremonies in places of worship were permitted from July 4, guests can now attend wedding receptions.

But there is a catch as only 30 people are allowed to attend, and social distancing measures will have to be followed.

Speaking at a press conference from Downing Street, The Prime Minister revealed a string of leisure facilities that can reopen from August 1 including bowling, skating, and casinos.

“We will also allow wedding receptions for up to 30 people,” he said.

Meanwhile, larger gatherings and live performances could open in autumn - subject to the success of pilots.

Mr Johnson added: “Nightclubs and soft play areas will sadly need to remain closed for now – although this will be kept under review.”

Currently, as part of places of worship reopening from July 4, services including weddings can go ahead with a maximum of 30 people, subject to social distancing.

Celebrations can only take place when people follow the guidance of six people outdoors, support bubbles, or two households indoors.

Meanwhile, Boris Johnson said he hoped for a “more significant return to normality by November” with a review over social distancing guidelines.

He announced that changes to allow close contact between family and friends could come in time for Christmas.
