Wedding organisers in Southall face a £10,000 fine for alleged Covid-19 breach

Two organisers of a wedding attended by 100 guests at restaurant in west London face a £10,000 fine for allegedly breaching Covid-19 regulations.

Officers shut down a couple’s large ceremony arranged by the men at around 7pm on Sunday.

When police arrived at Chaudhry’s TKC venue in Southall, one event organiser attempted to convince them there were only 15 people partying.

But in a curtained-off rear room, officers discovered 100 guests celebrating nuptials.

The Met said the gathering was in clear breach of the coronavirus regulations limiting wedding ceremonies and sit-down receptions to 15 attendees.

Two men have been reported for consideration of a fine.

It came amid reports couples across the UK may be "factoring in" fines for breaching Covid-19 rules as a wedding "cost".

Chief Superintendent Peter Gardner, commander for the Met’s West Area, said: “We are still in a national pandemic and infection rates are steadily rising - restrictions around weddings have been put in place to save lives.

“Coronavirus remains a real and deadly threat and more officers will be deployed in every borough to help keep people safe. They will patrol public spaces and will respond swiftly to incidents where groups gather in large numbers.

“It is very clear that the police cannot control the spread of the virus through enforcement alone, and we need Londoners to work with us. Therefore, please continue to act responsibly. Maintain social distancing, respect the new regulations and guidance, and help keep yourself, your friends and family safe.”
