Wedding horror as chemical thrown in bid to 'spoil day for bride and groom'

The dance floor of a luxury hotel became a toxic environment when a chemical substance was released at a wedding.

Four wedding guests were treated for breathing difficulties following the noxious gas dump at the Double Tree by Hilton in North Somerset on Friday.

Emergency services rushed to the scene at 10.30pm and are now hunting those responsible having identified a "suspected alkaline solution".

General manager Mehmet Kandemir suggested bad blood between the wedding guests could have been behind the release.

He said: "We believe there was animosity between people at the invite-only event - someone who wanted to spoil it for the bride and groom.

"A very low-level household chemical was thrown. There was a bit of disruption.

"The police and ambulance services did a fantastic job.

"Four guests were treated, but everyone was safe. No one was taken to hospital.

"The advice from Public Health South West was should the substance come into contact with skin, it should be washed off with cold water and was not a risk to public health."

A spokesman for the Avon and Somerset Constabulary said investigations were on going after the substance was released from a bottle.

"A number of people suffered breathing difficulties as a result but there were no significant injuries," they said.

"A police investigation is under way to find the person or people responsible and we're grateful for the ongoing support of employees at the hotel.

"If anyone has information which could help our inquiry, please call us on 101 and give the call handler the reference number 5219152927."

A spokeswoman for South Western Ambulance Service said: "We were called on Friday at 10.35pm to attend an incident in Congresbury.

"We sent the following resources to attend the incident: a hazardous area response team, two ambulances and a rapid response vehicle."
