A wedding guest has received backlash online after helping herself to a slice of cake before the bride and groom had cut it. TikTok user Hailey was at her friend's wedding when she made the "mortifying" mistake and cut into the top tier of the cake, thinking that the newlyweds had simply forgotten to serve it.

In the video, which has also received nearly 400,000 likes, Hailey is seen approaching the table and picking up a knife, before slicing into the cake between the figures of the bride and groom. The other guests at the wedding were left watching on in disbelief as she plated up the slice and licked her fingers before walking off.
Sharing the clip, which was captioned "my apologies to the bride and groom," Hailey explained the thinking behind her bold actions, having believed that the happy couple had forgotten to serve the cake to anyone else after cutting into it together. She wrote: "Me, a guest at my friend's wedding, ignoring the brownie table and confidentially cutting myself a slice of her wedding cake thinking, 'uh-oh! They forgot to serve it to everyone else'. I know better now, I hate myself."
Luckily for Hailey, a woman claiming to be the bride commented on the viral video and explained that all was forgiven. "As the bride whose cake this is," she wrote. "She is formally forgiven and has learned her lesson in wedding etiquette."
However, other TikTok users were not so forgiving. While some saw the funny side, many accused Hailey of "ruining" the couple's special day and said they would never speak to her again had she done the same thing at their wedding.
"This made me angry and it's not my wedding," wrote one, while another added: "I would have raged". A third wrote "Honestly this isn't even funny and this is why I will elope, because of selfish, unaware people like you."
One commenter said Hailey reminded them of "an alien trying to blend in on earth," while another said that her licking her fingers was "unreal" and "disgusting". One person wrote "you're not invited to my wedding," with another adding: "I would never talk to you again."
Others dismissed the claim that the incident was an "honest mistake", with one annoyed commenter writing: "If nobody else is obviously eating cake, isn't it common sense? Why not ask first too. Rude as hell." Another added: "Ruining someone's moment they can't redo. As an adult I can't imagine someone not knowing this isn't OK."
However, some argued that the person to blame wasn't Hailey but the person filming her, with nobody making any effort to stop her from taking a slice. "I just wanna know why the person videoing didn’t stop her," said one, while another wrote: "The person who took the video is the real criminal."
Many more found the incident hilarious, commenting that those who were outraged by it were simply overreacting. Some even said that they understood Hailey's thinking, having not heard of the traditional cake cutting at weddings.
