Wedding guests forced to live together on roof of venue during coronavirus lockdown

Around 55 people who were attending a wedding reception have been forced to live on a rooftop all together after the lockdown was announced.

The guests - including women, children and some toddlers who need to be breast-fed - arrived from several parts of Odisha, India to the Steel City on March 21.

With no place to go after the lockdown was extended, they have been forced to stay on the rooftop of the bridegroom's rented house in Jamshedpur, according to the Times of India.

A family member of the bridegroom, Sumit Kumar, said: "We are somehow arranging food for the guests, but with every passing day, it is becoming all the more economically unviable."

He added that a local club had arranged a meal for the guests, but it was not enough to feed everyone for a prolonged period of time.

Mr Kumar said also arranging food for the babies is problematic.

Another guest, Ram Panda, said: It is difficult to maintain social distancing and basic hygiene here. For 55 people, there are only two toilets.”

When Times of India visited the rooftop, most of the guests could be seen without masks, the news organisation said.

While the guests hoped to get passes from the district administration to travel back to Odisha, Mr Kumar said he wished NGOs and political parties would come to their aid to feed the guests.

India has reported 24,530 cases of COVID-19 and 780 deaths and authorities are setting up new teams to focus on compliance of lockdown measures.
