Wedding and funeral Covid restrictions in Scotland eased from today

Coronavirus restrictions on weddings and funerals have been eased across Scotland from today.

The new rules mean that people will be allowed to accompany the bride and the groom down the aisle with no requirement to wear a face covering.

Live entertainment will be able to resume at wedding receptions once again, but guests must remain seated

People from more than one household will also be allowed to help carry the coffin at funeral services.

Nicola Sturgeon described the easing of restrictions as ‘minor’ but ‘important’ when announcing the changes in Holyrood on Thursday.

The limits on the number of people allowed to attend funerals and weddings will remain in place.

A maximum of 50 people can attend ceremonies under level two restrictions, while this is increased to 100 in level one areas.

The changes also mean that wedding suppliers will no longer count towards the legal cap on the numbers.

Speaking on Thursday, the First Minister said: “We expect these changes to have a relatively minor impact on transmission - they are relatively minor changes.

“But I hope they will make some difference to those organising and attending weddings and funerals, ahead of the more substantial changes at level zero.”

Sturgeon said that that the restrictions will remain in place until July 19, when all of Scotland is expected to move the lowest level of coronavirus restrictions.

Up to 200 people will be able to attend weddings and funerals under level zero restrictions, while the limits on household gatherings indoors are expected to increase from that date.

The Scottish Government is aiming to lift all major coronavirus restrictions on August 9 under its plans to return Scotland to normality.
