Webinar to discuss Cambodia's post-independence architecture

"Locating The Vann Molyvann Project In Contemporary Cambodia" is the topic for the next online talk to be presented via Zoom by the Southeast Asian Cultural Heritage on Saturday, at 2pm.

The Vann Molyvann Project features an international team of architects, architecture students and researchers working in Cambodia to document the buildings of prolific architect Vann Molyvann.

During this one-hour talk, Pen Sereypagna, a freelance architect, urban researcher and director of the Vann Molyvann Project, will discuss the role of the project and address how Molyvann's architectural designs respond to Cambodia's culture, climate and environment.

Since its independence in 1953, Cambodia has experienced new forms of architecture and arts to define a new national identity towards modernisation. Many architects, engineers and planners from Cambodia and abroad have contributed to this effort but Molyvann's work stands out.

A graduate from Paris's Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux, he was appointed by Prince Norodom Sihanouk to a series of governmental and academic positions and was commissioned to design many large scale public projects, covering over 80 works that transformed Cambodia's environment.

His buildings managed to survive a civil war, American bombing and the Khmer Rouge, but they are now threatened by the rapid development of Phnom Penh. That's why the Vann Molyvann Project was established in 2009 to raise awareness of his extraordinary works.
